University of Ceylon, Peradeniya

A special convocation of the University of Ceylon was held on 12 February 1948 at the temporary Convocation Hall in Peradeniya. The Duke of Gloucester a brother of His Majesty The King laid the foundation stone for the convocation hall at Peradeniya on this occasion.

Minister of Transport and Works J.L.Kotelawala while inviting the Royal Highness mentioned that the ideal of many educated Ceylonese to have a University in appropriate surroundings is now being realized. It will be an inspiration for generations to come.

HRH Duke of Gloucester received the honorary degree of University of Ceylon as the first in the roll of distinguished graduates in Peradeniya and shared the honours of this convocation with the Prime Minister D.S.Senanayaka and Dr Andreas Nell who first suggested that the University be established on the magnificent surroundings of Peradeniya.

HRH Duke of Gloucester added that.

"We are all aware of the great influence which the environment plays in the education of young men and women. On this site, you have the opportunity of building a University unique in character and suited to the genius of the people of Ceylon".

These prophetic words are cherished by Peradeniya University Graduates to this date.

May this great temple of learning, Peradeniya University grow from strength to strength.
